DIY PotteryBarn Jack-O-Lantern Dupe!

The internet is going absolutely CRAZY over the trending terra cotta jack-o-lantern that Pottery Barn has to offer this season. While we absolutely adore them, we don’t love the price tag nearly as much. There are small, medium and large sizes available on the Pottery Barn website ranging from $50-$89. Luckily, we’ve found a trending DIY that recreates this look for far less. Our DIY version takes less than an hour and the all-in cost is around $25. I could see this being such a fun project to complete over a glass of wine with some crafty friends. Find all of the supplies and directions below! (& for our not so crafty friends… we’ve linked the original piece as well)

Pottery Barn Terracotta Jack O’ Lantern

Supplies Needed:

  1. Decorative Jack O’ Lantern

  2. Craft paint

  3. Foam brush/Paint brush

  4. Baking soda

  5. Flour

  1. Mix acrylic paint with baking soda to create a gritty texture

Mixing acrylic paint with baking soda will help create a texture similar to terracotta ceramic. In order to get the perfect color, I mixed a small amount of white acrylic paint in as well. I suggest mixing up more paint that you think you will need in order cover the entirety of the pumpkin so that you aren’t stuck having to color match halfway through.

2. Paint your Jack O’ Lantern using a paint brush

I used 2 coats of paint to cover my Jack O’ Lantern, leaving the first to dry completely before applying the second coat.

3. Dust your Jack O’ Lantern with flour

Before the second coat is completely dry, add flour in order to achieve the perfect dusty terracotta look. There is no specific technique for this step and it shouldn’t be perfect. I patted the flour on with a paint brush and spread it with my hands. I tried to emphasize the creases of the pumpkin but tried not to follow any pattern with this last step.
